Summer is a time for sunshine, freedom, and fun—but it’s also a season when the number of stray and homeless pets increases across Greater Houston. That’s why Barrio Dogs, a local nonprofit, is stepping in to teach kids how to become everyday animal advocates.
Through hands-on activities, school visits, and educational tools like their free Barrio Dogs Coloring Book, the organization is helping children build compassion, empathy, and responsibility when it comes to caring for animals in their neighborhoods.
Raising the Next Generation of Pet Protectors
“Teaching children about responsible pet ownership today creates compassionate animal advocates for tomorrow,” says Gloria Zenteno, founder of Barrio Dogs.
With their Youth Animal Program (YAP), Barrio Dogs visits schools around Houston to share age-appropriate lessons about pet care, animal welfare, and overpopulation prevention. Lessons are offered in both English and Spanish and focus on empowering kids to be part of the solution.
Thanks to support from Union Pacific Railroad’s Community Ties Giving Program, Barrio Dogs plans to reach over 15,000 students this year with their message of compassion and action.

6 Simple Ways Kids Can Help Animals This Summer
Here are some practical (and age-friendly) ways your child can make a difference for animals right now:
1. Show Kindness
Teach kids to treat all animals with love and respect. Even small acts of kindness—like gently petting a dog or helping a neighbor with their pet—can inspire bigger conversations and lasting change.
2. Keep Pets Cool
Summer heat is tough on animals. Kids can help by checking that pets have fresh water, shade, and never walk them on hot pavement. And remember: never leave pets in a parked car.
3. Report Strays
If your child sees a lost or stray animal, teach them to tell an adult or contact animal services. Reporting strays helps get animals the care they need while keeping communities safe.
4. Learn About Spaying and Neutering
Pet overpopulation is a big problem—especially during the summer. Kids can help by learning how spaying and neutering prevents unwanted litters and reduces suffering.
5. Educate Others
Encourage your child to share what they’ve learned with friends and family. The more people who know how to care for pets, the stronger and more compassionate our communities become.
6. Use Art to Inspire
Download the Barrio Dogs Coloring Book for fun, educational activities that teach kids about pet care in a creative and memorable way.

Be a Pet Hero
When kids understand that pets need love, food, shelter—and a little help from their human neighbors—they become the voice for animals in their homes and communities.
