Summer is just around the corner, and that means it's time to start thinking about summer camp! With so many options available, choosing the right one for your child can feel overwhelming. But don’t worry—we’ve broken it down into five easy steps to help you find the perfect camp experience for your child in Greater North Houston area.

1) Decide Between a Day Camp or an Overnight Camp

Day camps and overnight (resident) camps offer different experiences, and your choice will depend on your child’s age and readiness.

  • Day camps are a great starting point for children as young as 3 or 4 years old. They allow kids to experience fun activities while returning home at the end of the day. Many programs cater to different age groups and interests, running through high school.
  • Overnight camps typically start accepting kids around age 7, but most experts suggest that children between 10-12 years old are better prepared for extended stays away from home. If your child has attended day camps and is eager for a deeper experience, overnight camp may be a great option.

2) Consider Your Child’s Interests

The Greater North Houston area has a variety of camps catering to different interests, including:

  • Sports (soccer, basketball, swimming, gymnastics)
  • Arts & Theater (painting, music, drama, dance)
  • STEM & Computers (coding, robotics, science experiments)
  • Outdoor & Adventure (hiking, horseback riding, nature exploration)

Ask your child what they’re excited about, and also consider their personality and temperament. For example, if your child thrives in the outdoors, a nature or equestrian camp may be ideal. If they love technology, look for a coding or engineering camp.

3) Set Your Budget

Camp costs can vary significantly, so it’s important to determine what fits within your budget. Typically, day camps are more affordable than overnight camps. Many camps in our area offer early bird discounts, sibling discounts, and even scholarships. Once you’ve set a budget, involve your child in the decision-making process:

  • For younger kids, give them a few options to choose from.
  • For older kids, let them know the budget and allow them to decide between one expensive camp or multiple budget-friendly ones.

4) Ask the Right Questions

Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, reach out to camps and ask important questions:

  • What is the staff-to-camper ratio?
  • How is staff screened and trained?
  • What safety measures are in place?
  • What is the camp’s refund policy?
  • How do you handle homesickness or camper conflicts?
  • What does a typical daily schedule look like?
  • Are meals and snacks provided?
  • What should my child bring?

Talking to other parents, checking online reviews, and visiting open house events can also help you make an informed decision.

5) Sign Up Early!

Spots fill up quickly, and many camps offer discounts for early registration. Be sure to check with camps about any available promotions or flexible payment options. Check out our 2025 Macaroni Kid Greater North Houston Summer Camp & Swim Guide to get instantly over to your camp of desire!
