Tips for Airplane Travel with Infants/Kids

By Syneetra Williams August 2, 2017

Traveling via the airways with infants and toddlers is challenging. Proper planning is essential. As with everything in life, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail! Keep this in the forefront of your mind if you must fly with your baby. Did you know that if your child is under age two, you do not have to purchase a ticket? While the savings is significant, there may be a slight drawback. Your baby must travel in your lap for the duration of the flight even if the spot next to you is empty. If you decide to pay for a seat, you must bring a car seat. Remember, a car seat is the safest way for your bundle to travel.

Although a car seat is best, many people want to avoid having to carry it as they move about various airports. Another option that works is a baby sling. It allows for hands-free movement, and if you are nursing, you can do it while the baby is inside. Slings are cozy, allow bonding time, and are convenient. Many cultures and sub-cultures around the world utilize slings. They also work for dads!

About two weeks or so before you make your excursion, create a baby-gear checklist to ensure smooth travel. Remember, if you don’t pack something important it will create a stressful experience. Many airport shops do not carry baby supplies.

·         Bring diapers and wipes (enough for travel time plus 24 hours extra in case of delays),

·         Pack two or three receiving blankets – they’re great as nursing cover-ups, for naps, for keeping your baby warm, and for keeping your clothes protected from spit-up,

·         Bring a change of clothes for your child – at the very least, pack an extra onesie,

·         Pack nursing pads and shields if you’re breastfeeding,

·         Bring formula and bottles if you bottle-feed – again, plan for travel time plus 24 hours to be safe,

·         Bring pacifiers, if necessary – always bring a couple of spares

·         Pack one or two board books and a couple of comfort toys

·         Carry a sling or a baby carrier,

·         Pack baby-friendly snacks, such as Cheerios and puffs,

·         Bring a couple of Ziploc bags – they come in handy for storing snacks and keeping soiled clothes separate in your diaper bag,

·         Bring a stroller,

·         Bring all medications your child may be taking,

·         Pack powered milk or formula.

According to the Mayo Clinic, it is safe to travel with an infant. Check with your doctor before you leave for any necessary precautions. Think about your baby’s age and the things that bring him or her comfort. Pacifiers and eating will alleviate earaches caused by cabin pressure. Allow them to suck at take-off and landing.

Please consider the person sitting next to you. Many people do not want to sit next to someone with an infant. If your baby has a dirty diaper, please change it in the bathroom to avoid embarrassment. Aircraft restrooms have changing tables. Remember, the other passengers will get offended by odors and complain loudly.

You love your baby, others, not so much. Children are not considered welcomed passengers. Smile at the flight attendants and politely ask for warm water to mix the baby formula. Make sure your toddler(s) are not bothering your neighbors in any way. Again, people will grumble, and the flight staff is obligated to hear their protests and acquiesce.

Traveling with a baby or small child is not easy. Sometimes it cannot be avoided. When this happens, being a well-prepared parent(s) will make for smooth travel for your family and others. Now, take a deep breath, smile, be patient, prepared and enjoy your flight.
